Neighbors United is a grassroots mutual aid program based in the Hyde Park neighborhood of Chicago supporting those seeking asylum. We organize volunteers who support a pro bono law firm that provides emergency legal services to asylum seekers, so their rights are protected while they seek long-term representation. Through word of mouth referrals, we and our law firm partner have now provided some form of legal assistance or consultation to more than 2,700 people and directly filed applications for hundreds of asylum seekers.

We provide assistance through clerical legal support, mutual aid, transportation, education, and community connections. Our work provides a critical supplement to existing services – both nonprofit organizations and the private bar – that have been drastically overstretched by the volume of need.
